Thinking back over this course, what were the three most important or most
interesting things you learned? How do you envision using the information you
learned in your future nursing practice? What steps will you take to ensure your
success in the master's program?
A few interesting things that I have learned during this course is truly understanding the different
roles for each APN role and understanding how important scholarship engagement is with
continued used of current evidence based data.What surprised me about the APN roles are how
many different things they can do. They can actually practice as a provider for patients with
specific populations. Np’s responsibilities can include educating, coaching, communication
skills, charting, writing prescriptions, physical examinations, reviewing laboratory results as well
as ordering radiological procedures. Another surprising thing I found out after reading about all
the APN roles are that the Clinical Nurse Specialist are not able to apply for APRN licensure
because they do not specialize direct patient care. I chose the FNP route, so it never crossed my
mind to even read about the other APN roles until this course. Scholarship engagement is
important with continued use of current evidence based data. The goal of EBP is to promote
effective nursing practice, efficient care, and improved patient outcomes and to provide the best
available evidence to support decision making (denisco & Barker, 2015). As future APN’s we
have to be current with our data and understand that nursing and healthcare will continue to
change and we have to change our practices for the betterment of patient care if evidence based
data proves so.
I envision using the information learned in my future nursing practice in every way possible.
Understanding our own role as an experienced RN as well as knowing that we will be a novice
as an APN will allow us to have realistic goals in our future practice. We must begin to utilize
our other new cap with critical thinking as a provider, understanding out population of
individuals of who we will be caring for. Sometimes as a RN we get caught up in taking the
orders and completing all tasks and monitoring the patient for that time being. As a future APN
that role will change as we will have the opportunity to be the provider and care for patients
throughout their life span. To ensure my success in this masters program I have be open minded,
ready and willing to learn and to soak all information up. Learn about my future role and
expectations. Understand what my state licensure will allow. Master's-prepared advanced
practice nurses are responsible for evaluating and implementing evidence-based approaches that
yield best practices for nursing in all healthcare and healthcare- related settings (NLN, 2012).
