Introduction
Why This Poem Matters
At first glance, An African Thunderstorm appears to be a simple description of a
storm approaching.
However, the poem is much more than a weather report.
David Rubadiri transforms an ordinary thunderstorm into a powerful force that
affects:
• people
• animals
• nature
• the atmosphere
The poem shows how nature can be beautiful, exciting and frightening at the
same time.
Distinction Insight
Many learners write:
The poem describes a storm.
This is only the surface meaning.
A stronger interpretation is:
Rubadiri presents the storm as an unstoppable force of nature whose arrival creates
fear, excitement and dramatic change.
About the Poet
David Rubadiri (1930–2018)
David Rubadiri was a Malawian poet, novelist, diplomat and academic.
His writing often focuses on:
• Africa
• nature
• politics
• colonialism
• identity
• everyday African experiences
Unlike many poets who simply describe landscapes, Rubadiri often gives nature its
own personality and power.

Historical Context
Rubadiri wrote during a period when many African countries were gaining
independence.
Although An African Thunderstorm is not directly political, many critics believe the
storm can also symbolise major social and political change.
Whether read literally or symbolically, the storm represents an unstoppable force.
Insight
For the NSC examination, you should first analyse the poem literally (as a storm).
Only discuss symbolic interpretations if the question asks for deeper meaning.
Understanding the Title
An African Thunderstorm
The title immediately establishes:
• the setting (Africa)
• the subject (a thunderstorm)
Notice that Rubadiri does not call it The Thunderstorm.
Instead, he writes:
An African Thunderstorm
This suggests that the poem celebrates a storm that is characteristic of the African
landscape.
Close Reading
The title is simple, but it immediately prepares readers for a poem dominated by
movement, sound and energy.
Overview
The poem follows the arrival of a violent storm.
As it approaches:
• the wind grows stronger
• clouds gather
• dust fills the air
• trees bend
• people panic
• children become excited
Nature gradually transforms from calm to chaos.
