CHAPTER OVERVIEW
Globalization has become a major socioeconomic force and topic of debate in the 21st century.
This chapter begins by exploring the benefits of studying IB and examining the relationship
between IB and globalization. It goes on to look at the dynamic evolution of globalization and
uses the PESTEL framework to evaluate factors catalyzing or constraining globalization. Next,
the difference between IB and domestic business is addressed followed by a discussion of why
companies engage in IB. Finally, the key players in IB and the operated modes used are
examined. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how studying IB enhances professional
skills.
CHAPTER OUTLINE
OPENING CASE: THE VIDEO GAME MARKET: PLAYING THE GLOBALIZATION
GAME
The video game industry—namely, the creation, development, publishing, distribution, and
monetization of video games across various platforms—offers a compelling example of
globalization’s transformative power. This dynamic industry spans software, hardware, and
accessories like consoles, controllers, and VR headsets, captivating players worldwide. The
industry has seen remarkable growth; over 3 billion people globally are active video game
players, with nearly half the planet engaged in gaming. This is a sharp increase from just a few
decades ago when video games were far less accessible and socially acceptable. The global
gaming industry converted this massive scale and reach into a staggering $242.39 billion in
1
, revenue in 2023. Riding the momentum of the metaverse and esports, it is on its way to an
estimated $600 billion by 2030.
Sure, there have been many moderators, but, fundamentally, this exceptional growth has been
driven by globalization’s capacity to connect players, developers, and businesses across borders.
As one analyst explained: Video games have become a prime example of how globalization
removes physical and cultural barriers, allowing players worldwide to collaborate and
communicate across language and age differences. This interconnectedness is reshaping how
games are developed, marketed, and experienced on a global scale.
This remarkable state of affairs is a far cry from the industry’s beginnings in the 1970s and
1980s. Then, gaming was primarily confined to clunky arcade machines in dimly lit arcades,
each offering a single, isolated experience. Or, if played at home, it was a niche hobby that, by
today’s standards, was ridiculously primitive. Players were limited to basic consoles like the
Atari 2600, which played a few simple, pixelated games on cartridges. Today, by contrast,
gamers around the world have access to a vast, ever-expanding library of games—ranging from
300,000 to over a million titles—playable on high-definition platforms like the PlayStation 5 or
Xbox, creating increasingly lifelike virtual worlds that connect millions across vast distances.
This rapid growth underscores the interconnectedness fostered by globalization and the catalytic
role of digital marketplaces. Streamlined global trade and e-commerce have made gaming
hardware more accessible and affordable worldwide. Simultaneously, digital marketplaces like
app stores have revolutionized game distribution, removing earlier barriers such as physical
media, costly shipping, and regional restrictions. For example, before digital distribution,
consoles like the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation used regional locks to restrict games by region—
meaning that certain titles were only available in specific markets. Today, platforms like Steam
and the Apple App Store grant instant access to a global catalog of games, enabling players
worldwide to access previously restricted titles without geographic limitations. As one analyst
explained, “The shift to digital has eliminated barriers that previously held the gaming market
back, such as regional restrictions and supply chain issues. Today, developers and publishers can
reach audiences worldwide instantly, ensuring the widest possible distribution of their products.”
Digital marketplaces also enable independent developers to access a global audience without
relying on traditional publishing and distribution networks. This has allowed gamers easier and
faster access to a wider variety of titles. The indie game Among Us, developed by a small team,
became a global sensation during the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing digital distribution’s
potential to level the playing field. In 2022, digital game sales—made easily accessible through
robust online distribution systems—accounted for an impressive 94 percent of the global video
game market. Mobile gaming, especially via smartphones, has further democratized access to
gaming, bringing high quality games to more people in more places than ever before.
Already growing at an unprecedented rate, the gaming industry is set to accelerate further with
new technological innovations, ushering in a new era of gaming experiences. Artificial
intelligence (AI) optimizes matchmaking algorithms to connect players of similar skill levels,
creating balanced multiplayer experiences that keep gamers coming back. Additionally,
emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are transforming
