A. A standard health care setting is a Primary Care Clinic. EPIC would be an EHRS used in this
type of setting.
1. The purpose of EPIC in a primary care setting is to support the delivery of high quality,
efficient patient care by having patient information stored, organized and centrally
located.
2. EPIC integrates data such as lab results, imaging, hospital discharge summaries, and
notes from specialist visits. The provider having access to all this information gives them
a full picture of the patient’s health and helps them to make more informed decisions
regarding their care. In addition, EPIC has clinical decision support tools that will alert
the care team when vaccines or routine screenings may be coming due and this allows the
team to make evidence-based decisions regarding patient care.
3. A key barrier to using an EHRS is usability and workflow disruption. Small practices
have fewer resources. Unlike hospitals, primary care offices may lack on-site IT staff, so
troubleshooting usability issues becomes a significant challenge. Primary care providers
often see many patients in short visits. If the EHRS requires time-consuming charting and
too many clicks, it can slow them down.
4. In a primary care office, the nurse plays a vital role in maintaining data integrity while
addressing the usability challenges of the EHRS. Nurses ensure that patient information,
such as vital signs, medical history, medications, and allergies, is entered accurately and
consistently, reducing the risk of errors caused by difficult or time-consuming
documentation processes. They also verify and reconcile data, particularly medication
