PROTISTA → Unicellular & Eukaryotic

• One single cell: Entire organism consists of a single cell structure.

• Has distinct nucleus: Contains well-defined membrane-bound genetic material.




Group 1: Photosynthetic Protist
• Etymology: photo (light) + synthetic (formn / formation)

• Example: Algae green - chlorophyll


CO2 + H2O Sunlight / Chlorophyll → C6H12O6 + O2


Process: Photosynthesis → Autotroph



Group 2: Slime Moulds
• Example: Fungi-like protists


Group 3: Protozoan Protist
Defined as unicellular animals belonging to the Phylum Protozoa, characterized as unicellular eukaryotic
organisms.

HABIT / HABITAT

• Free living: Found independently in environments (some protozoa).

• Parasitic: Live inside the body of a host organism and cause definitive harm to the host.

• Saprophyte: Live and feed on dead & decaying organic matter.

• Habitat: The physical place where living organisms live.
◦ Aquatic: Live in water environments (both fresh water and marine water).

◦ Moist / damp places.

◦ Stagnant water bodies.
