1.1 Five Key Reasons Why Storytelling is Important
Building Trust and Empathy: Storytelling helps paralegals build trust with clients by
demonstrating that they have listened to and understood their experiences. When a paralegal
can accurately retell a client's story, it validates the client's feelings and creates a foundation for
a strong working relationship (Hollander-Blumoff, 2017:13).
Humanising Legal Advocacy: Stories put a human face on legal issues, making abstract legal
concepts tangible and relatable. This is particularly important for community-based paralegals
who work with marginalised communities, as storytelling ensures that the human impact of
legal problems is not lost in procedural formalities (Barsky, 2017:89).
Empowering Communities: Storytelling is a tool for legal empowerment. When paralegals help
community members tell their own stories, they shift the power dynamic from one where the
professional is the expert to one where the community member is the expert of their own
