PART 1- Historical Context, Background, Overview, Summary and Themes
Why This Poem Matters
At first glance, Remember Me appears to be a simple love poem in which the
speaker asks a loved one not to forget them after death. However, as the poem
develops, Rossetti presents a much more mature and compassionate understanding
of love.
Instead of insisting on being remembered forever, the speaker eventually realises
that true love is selfless. If remembering the speaker causes pain, then forgetting is
an act of healing rather than betrayal.
This unexpected shift makes the poem far more complex than many learners initially
realise.
Distinction Tip
The poem is not only about remembering someone after death. It is ultimately
about choosing another person's happiness over your own desire to be
remembered.
About the Poet
Christina Rossetti (1830–1894)
Christina Rossetti was one of the most important poets of the Victorian era. She was
born in London into a family deeply involved in literature and the arts. Her brother,
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a
movement that valued beauty, symbolism and emotional depth in art.
Rossetti's poetry often explores themes such as:
• love
• faith
• death
• memory
• sacrifice
• hope
• the afterlife
Although many of her poems deal with death, they are rarely frightening. Instead,
Rossetti treats death as a natural part of life and focuses on the emotional
relationships that continue even after someone has died.

Historical Context
Victorian England
Remember Me was written during the Victorian period (1837–1901).
Death was a much more common part of everyday life than it is today. Diseases
such as tuberculosis and cholera claimed many lives, and medical treatment was
limited. As a result, families often experienced the loss of loved ones at a young age.
Victorian society placed great importance on mourning. It was common to wear black
clothing, keep photographs of deceased relatives and preserve personal belongings
as a way of remembering them.
Rossetti's readers would therefore have immediately understood the emotional
significance of remembering someone after death.
However, Rossetti challenges some Victorian expectations by suggesting that
endless mourning is not always the healthiest expression of love.
The Form of the Poem
Remember Me is a Petrarchan (Italian) sonnet.
A Petrarchan sonnet consists of:
• 14 lines
• An octave (first 8 lines)
• A sestet (last 6 lines)
The rhyme scheme is traditionally:
ABBA ABBA CDD ECE
One of the defining features of a Petrarchan sonnet is the volta ("turn"), where the
poem shifts in meaning or tone.
In Remember Me, the volta occurs at line 9.
This shift is one of the most important features of the poem.
Exam Tip
If a question asks about the structure of the poem, always mention the volta and
explain how it reflects the speaker's emotional change.
