1. Introduction

Kidnapping has emerged as one of the most concerning forms of violent crime
affecting South African society. The increasing occurrence of kidnapping incidents
presents a significant threat to public safety, individual freedom and national
security. Although kidnapping has historically been associated with isolated
criminal acts, recent developments indicate that the crime has become increasingly
organised, with criminal networks using abduction as a method of generating
financial profit, controlling victims and supporting other illicit activities. The
growth of kidnapping in South Africa reflects broader challenges associated with
organised crime, economic inequality, unemployment and the availability of
criminal networks capable of planning and executing complex offences.
