CIC2601 ASSIGNMENT 3 2026
DUE 31 JULY 2026
QUESTION 1: REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON ASSIGNMENT 2
Introduction
Assignment 2 was about creating a technology-integrated lesson plan for Grade R
Mathematics. The topic was Number Concept and Counting (Numbers 1-10). I had to
design a lesson that uses a flipped classroom approach. This means learners watch a
short video at home and then do hands-on activities in class. I followed the lesson plan
template from the study guide (CIC2601 Study Guide, Unit 1). I also had to include ICT
tools like YouTube, Poll Everywhere, and Google Slides. I also had to show how I would
help different types of learners.
I completed several activities for this assignment. I made a detailed lesson plan using
the format shown in Unit 1. As well as designed an at-home activity where learners
watch a counting video and do a simple worksheet., I planned an in-class introduction
using Poll Everywhere to check what learners remembered from the video. Then
created a development activity where learners work in small groups to count objects
and match them to number cards. I planned a consolidation activity where learners draw
objects and sing a counting song together.
,Learning Experiences
Completing Assignment 2 taught me many important things about using technology in
the classroom. I learned that a flipped classroom can work well for young children.
When they watch a video at home first, they learn the basic ideas before coming to
school. This means we can use class time for play-based and hands-on activities, which
is how young children learn best (CIC2601 Study Guide, Unit 1). The study guide also
explains that teachers must plan lessons carefully to achieve the lesson outcomes.
I developed several new skills. I learned how to use Poll Everywhere to create live polls.
Learners can answer using their phones or tablets, and the results appear on the
screen. This is great for shy learners because they can share answers without speaking
in front of the whole class. I also learned how to use Google Slides to show pictures and
keep learners engaged. I learned how to make a simple worksheet with pictures for
young learners to count and circle the correct number.
I was exposed to new technologies. I had never used Poll Everywhere before, but now I
see how useful it is for checking what learners remember. I also learned more about
using YouTube videos for teaching. The study guide mentions that teachers can use the
internet and WWW to find educational content (CIC2601 Study Guide, Unit 3). I learned
to choose short, clear videos that are right for young children.
Challenges and Solutions
I faced some challenges while doing Assignment 2. The first challenge was
understanding how a flipped classroom works for Grade R learners. I was not sure if
young children could learn from watching videos at home. I solved this by reading more
about lesson planning in Unit 1. The study guide shows that teachers need to plan
teaching activities and learning activities carefully. I realised that young children can
watch videos with their parents and pause or rewatch if they need more time.
, Another challenge was finding the right YouTube video. I needed a video that was short,
bright, and easy for young children to follow. I searched on YouTube and found several
counting videos. I chose one that was 3-5 minutes long. The study guide suggests that
teachers should search for and evaluate information before using it (CIC2601 Study
Guide, Unit 3).
I also worried about learners who do not have internet at home. Many South African
families do not have reliable internet. I found solutions by thinking about what the study
guide says about accommodating all learners. The teacher can give a USB stick with
the video to families without internet. The school can also let learners watch the video at
school before the lesson. This shows that teachers must plan for different situations.
The example of Reabetswe Magagane’s Assignment 2, which was given in the course
materials, helped me a lot. I looked at how she structured her lesson plan and used ICT
tools. This gave me good ideas for my own work. The rubric for Assignment 2 also
helped me understand what the markers were looking for.
Personal Growth and Professional Development
This assignment helped me grow as a future teacher. I now understand that technology
is not just for older learners. It can also be used with young children to make learning
more interesting and fun. The study guide explains that the integration of ICTs can
enhance teaching and learning (CIC2601 Study Guide, Unit 1). I saw that technology
can help learners understand better when it is used in a smart way.
I learned that ICT can support teaching in many ways. Teachers can use WhatsApp to
share videos and worksheets with parents. They can use Poll Everywhere to let shy
learners participate. They can use Google Slides to show pictures and keep learners
engaged. The study guide discusses how teachers can use presentation software and
the internet for teaching (CIC2601 Study Guide, Unit 3). I also learned that ICT can
save class time by moving basic learning to home, so more time is available for practice
and play.
