Answers
Ch 44 - Understand the risk for CV disease development—this is in your book. Who is

most likely to develop CV disease? What are risk factors? How do you calculate risk?

Table 44.3

Advancing age, black race, hypertension, smoking, low HDL. High HDL is also a risk factor.

Diabetes.

Age, total cholesterol, HDL, smoking status, systolic BP.

Ch 41 - Treatment of hypertension! Especially the "big four" classes of drugs—

diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers 39, ACEI/ARBs: Know how to use

and side effects, and drugs that are used in combination—and the benefit of using them

in combination (for instance, using a thiazide diuretic plus and ACE offsets the effect on

potassium). Make sure you know the side effects of ACEI, ARBs, beta blockers, and

CCBs. Amlodipine, Lisinopril, Metoprolol, Labetalol, Carvedilol, Losartan, Valsartan,

HCTZ, Chlorthalidone, Verapamil are good to know.

Ch 42 - Treatment of heart failure! Be aware of combination therapy here and the

rationale. Know the roles of ACEI, beta blockers, diuretics. Know monitoring

parameters for the HF patient. Know how to manage HF in certain comorbidities

(HTN, previous MI). Mark the table (table 42.3) in your book that talks about the stages

of HF and discusses management if this is not something you are already familiar with!

Lisinopril, Digoxin, Metoprolol, HCTZ, Furosemide, Ivabradine, Sacubitril, Losartan,

Valsartan, anticoagulants (see below) are good to know.

, CH 91 - MI management! Understand the drugs that a patient who has had an MI

would be given at discharge and why. Know the drugs that are used "in the moment"—

especially drugs used to dissolve or prevent clots. Remember, there are different classes

of drugs here, that are anticoagulant or antiplatelet. Understand rationale for using

drugs like Clopidogrel, Prasugrel, Ticlopidine, Alteplase, Enoxaparin, Rivaroxaban,

Apixaban

CH 44 - Management of hyperlipidemias! High LDLs, High VLDLs, familial

hypercholesterolemia. Be very familiar with side effects of 'statins, niacin, gemfibrozil,

fenofibrate—know the different drugs for different hyperlipidemias. Who is typically

prescribed PCSK9 inhibitors (Evolocumab)? Know how to calculate (or assess) CV risk.

See p. 354.

Ch 45 - Management of Angina! Use and DDI of nitrates. Use and DDI of ranolazine.

Use of BBs and CCBs in angina—and the types of angina vs. treatment

Ch 43 - Management of dysrhythmias! Pay attention to the use of beta blockers, calcium

channel blockers, adenosine, procainamide, lidocaine amiodarone, propafenone and

quinidine here. Know how these are used and monitoring, as well as any SE. Recognize

DDIs—especially with amiodarone

Ch 46 - Anticoagulant and Antiplatelet Drugs! Make sure you know about monitoring

of Heparin/Enoxaparin and Warfarin. What are the advantages of drugs like Apixaban

and Rivaroxaban vs. warfarin? How and when are antiplatelet agents used? SE? ADR?

DDI? (Table 46.6; Table 46.8; black box warnings).

Ch 37 - Understand the use of diuretics (esp thiazides and loops, occasionally K-

sparing) in hypertension and heart failure; HCTZ, Chlorthalidone, Furosemide,

Spironolactone, Amiloride, Mannitol
