What is the video?
The video that is being analyzed is the music video for the hit song “Where is the Love”
by the Black-Eyed Peas. This was a hit song that came out in the early 2000’s and was a very
catchy song. It hit on a lot of big topics throughout the song and brought awareness to the hate
that is spread around the world on a daily basis. They speak on different gangs and hate groups
such as the “Bloods, Kripps, and the KKK” (BlackEyedPeas, 2009). They talk about war and
how nations are, “Dropping bombs and chemical gases are filling lungs of little ones”
(BlackEyedPeas, 2009).
What are the visuals and images used within the video?
Throughout the video it shows a van of people who are going around to different parts of
a community and plastering question mark symbol all over the place. “This video is about the
band and normal people asking the world where is the love? Will.I.Am and Taboo are going
around in a van trying to get the word out whilst Fergie and others are posting question marks
over the streets. apl.de.ap gets arrested near the end for trying to spread the truth” (Mcloughlin,
2011). They depict people of all ages throughout the video, and they depict multiple scenarios as
well. You are shown a community that looks like it is in the ghetto or the harder parts of town
where there are people being chased by police. You also see there are small children’s being
show violence on the streets and on their tv’s.
They use the tactic of pulling the heart strings by having children of all ages that look sad
sing parts of the chorus in front of the camera, so you only see their sad little faces asking,
“Where is the Love?” They also do this by showing a young man being chased by the police, the
police finally catching him and then finally writing him a charge and handcuffing him.
What is the message being portrayed in the video?
