,PYC3714 EXAM
QUESTION 1(a)(i)
Distinguish between constructs and variables.
Constructs are abstract theoretical concepts used to explain behaviour and mental
processes that cannot be observed directly. Examples include intelligence, anxiety, and
achievement motivation. They are "latent" (invisible) and exist only as theoretical
entities.
Variables are constructs that have been measured and operationalised through a
systematic procedure, making them observable and quantifiable. They are "manifest"
(visible) in the sense that they can be recorded as numerical values. For example,
anxiety as a construct becomes a variable when measured using an anxiety
questionnaire that produces a numerical score.
