●● What is the difference between utilitarianism and egoism?
Answer: Egoism, is the view that each of us should always act, so is to
maximize our own happiness. Whereas, Utilitarianism states that we
always ought to act so is to maximize everyone's happiness or overall
sum of happiness.

●● What is hedonistic utilitarianism?
Answer: It's the view that we should always act to maximize pleasure
overall.

●● Explain why if utilitarianism is true and happiness is pleasure,
hedonistic utilitarianism is true.
Answer: If happiness is pleasure, and pleasure is happiness, then
hedonistic utilitarianism is true.

●● What is the (intrinsic) desire-satisfaction theory of individual welfare
and how does it differ from hedonism?
Answer: Intrinsic desire-satisfaction theory of individual welfare: desire
for something for its own sake (non-instrumental); ex. pleasure.
Hedonism is what is non-instrumentally good for us is getting what we

, want for its own sake; pleasure is one of those things but it's not the only
thing.

●● Why might someone prefer the desire-satisfaction theory to the
hedonistic theory or individual welfare?
Answer: People don't just want the pleasure from believing that their
families love them, but they actually want them to love them. If you
believe this to be true, you would prefer the desire-satisfaction theory.

●● What is preference-utilitarianism?
Answer: Always act to achieve the greatest amount of desire satisfaction.

●● Explain why if utilitarianism, is true and happiness is desire-
satisfaction, then preference-utilitarianism is also true.
Answer: Utilitarianism is when we act to always maximize our
happiness. Preference-utilitarianism is always act to maximize desire-
satisfaction. If happiness is desire-satisfaction, the utilitarianism is to
always maximize desire-satisfaction, which explains why preference-
utilitarianism is true.

●● Why might someone think that hedonism is a "swinish doctrine"?
Answer: Hedonism is a piggish doctrine or doctrine fit only for pigs. If
hedonism is true, then what makes a human life good, is the same thing
as what makes a pig's life good, which is pleasure.
