Introduction
Ashwagandha is a plant native to tropical regions and is commonly found in Asia, Africa,
and warmer climates of Europe, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements (n.d.). The root
of the plant Ashwagandha is used for medicinal purposes; however, the leaves and the whole
plant can be consumed according to the Office of Dietary Supplements (n.d.). Ashwagandha is a
root with many names; a few others are winter cherry, Indian ginseng, and Withania Somnifera
Dunal, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements (n.d.). Ashwagandha is an herbal
supplement taken to relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and promote sleep, according to the Office of
Dietary Supplements (n.d.). However, more recent research suggests that Ashwagandha can be
beneficial for anti-inflammatory effects, chemical imbalances in the brain, male infertility, and
improve immune system function according to Mikulska et al. (2023). Herbal supplements are
always a popular choice, as they are readily available without a prescription. Herbal supplements
should not be taken without a warning, as they can have adverse effects and interactions, just like
prescription medications. This paper will describe the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and
potential drug interactions of Ashwagandha.
Pharmacodynamics
After Ashwagandha is consumed, it is broken down into three components called
witanolides, alkaloids, and steroidal saponins according to Mikulska et al. (2023). These
components can alter the body in unusual ways that help with anti-inflammation, stress
reduction, and immune system response. One disease that is found to have potential
improvement when the person takes Ashwagandha is Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease is
characterized by increased levels of the amyloid protein in the brain; ashwagandha can decrease
the production and deposition of amyloid proteins, according to Mikulska et al. (2023). When a
