Remember back when you were first learning about all the different kinds of jobs that
people do? And you would think to yourself “I want to be this when I grow up” or “I want to do
that when I get big.” Dreams. We all have them, and they are what influences us to succeed. We
fantasize about our dream jobs all the time, without really thinking “what’s stopping me?” For
instance, I have always wanted to become an astronaut. Whether or not I actually become one is
up for time or fate to tell, but regardless, it is a dream that I am deciding to chase. This strange
phenomenon that involves people clouding out their own potential to not pursue what they really
want is something that I have spent some time researching to see how it develops and how we
can remind ourselves to not be afraid of the future. Today, I will be telling you why you should
not be afraid to take a chance on your dreams. You will hear about the importance of success,
how some of today’s famous figures took this chance, and how you can too.
Let’s begin with this word: success. Seven letters that can be used to describe the entirety
of someone’s goals, plans for the future, or even their livelihood. It is universal in the fact that it
is something that we all want, no matter the circumstances. I mean, have you ever met someone
who didn’t want to be successful? And if your answer is somehow yes, then please tell me you
also asked them why. Take a moment to think about what your answer would be if you did not
want the idea of success in your life. Why wouldn’t you want to be successful? I don’t have an
answer either, but if success is what we want so badly, let’s go get it.
Just like most things in life, Success does not care how much you want it, because if it
did, then everyone would have it. Everyone has to earn it somehow and depending on what your
idea of success is compared to those around you, you might be in for a couple months of hard
work and dedication, or an entire lifetime. It all hinges on your personal definition of success.
, What it is that you want to become. Success is determined by fulfilling an intended purpose,
which is determined by someone’s wants and aspirations, which is what your dreams are derived
from, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera… When the dust finally settles, it is entirely up to you.
However, as Jessica A. stated in her online article titled “7 Things That Will Prevent You From
Being Successful” from Lifehack.org on October 21, 2015, “Perhaps only few people are willing
to make their environment conducive enough to welcome in Success.” What Jessica A. goes on
to say is that while success is very rewarding and long lasting, it is not easy to achieve, and that
there are many common habits that can inhibit your ability to get there. In my opinion, I think
that out of the seven that are mentioned, there are four major ones that should be discussed: The
Fear of Failure, Ignorance, the Lack of Purpose, and the Lack of Self-Belief.
Firstly, the Fear of Failure. This is a fear that I believe everyone will experience
inevitably and is completely normal and understandable. Of course, we all want to succeed, but
as I just mentioned, there will be many obstacles that everyone has to overcome. This fear acts as
a simulation in our minds representing our lives without success. What if we fail to overcome
one of these obstacles? What if what I tried didn’t work? These are questions that will never go
away until you get there. To overcome them, we must see failure as not an obstacle itself, but an
opportunity. An opportunity to succeed again. Failure teaches us to learn from our mistakes and
motivate ourselves to find a way that works. People experience failure daily, and for those who
learned from it, it will not be the end of the road, but for those who do not, it very well could be.
Secondly, Ignorance. In today’s world, things are changing constantly. Technology,
Medicine, Politics, Society, Lifestyles, the list goes on and on. So, if everything around you is
changing, why shouldn’t you? I’m not saying that we should change the way we live or change
our passions or anything like that, but more so change our minds and the way we think about the
