speech impairment
- hearing loss
- concurrent cognitive impairment
- visual acuity deficits, visual agnosia, and visual field cuts
- upper extremity hemiparesis
- language spoken
- post stroke depression
- presence of chronic pain from either preexisting or new conditions
- endurance and fatigue
Screening - ANS ✔✔Does not provide a detailed description of the severity and characteristics
of aphasia - it is a procedure for identifying the need for further assessment.
May result in recommendation for comprehensive assessment (speech, language, swallowing,
or cognitive-communication)
May also result in referral for other examinations or services
, Comprehensive assessment is conducted to identify and describe: - ANS ✔✔1. impairments in
body structure and function
- (includes underlying weaknesses in spoken and written language that might affect
communication performance)
2. comorbid deficits
- (include other health conditions and medications that can affect communication performance)
3. limitations in activity and participation
- (include changes in, and impact on, functional status in communication and interpersonal
interactions - e.g., no sports, can't work, calling and ordering food, reading books)
4. contextual (environmental and personal) factors
- (include factors that serve as barriers to, or facilitators of, successful communication and life
participation)
5. quality of life
- (impact of communication impairments on QoL refers to function limitations relative to the
individual's premorbid social roles like being a parent or spouse, and the impact on their
community; loss of identity, try to create new normal)
Planning assessment - ANS ✔✔Assessment protocols can include both standardized and
nonstandardized tools and data sources
Appropriate accommodations and modifications can be made to the testing process to reconcile
cultural and linguistic variations - these should be documented
