The Bible can be seen to present conflicting approaches to the roles of men and women in society,
with some passages promoting the submission of women to men, and others encouraging women to
take an active and independent role in society, standing equal to men. Christians, therefore, may
find it difficult to know how to act accordingly, however when in a dilemma it is important that
Christians act through agape and so the most compassionate approach would be to promote
feminism and create a society based on equality.
Western society is traditionally patriarchal, with men holding power and women taking a more
submissive role. Feminism, which first emerged in the 19 th century, is a response to this patriarchy
which aims to free women from male dominance and give them independence.
