availability of other reinforcers

Specify which reinforcement schedule each of the following illustrations exemplifies (
either continuous, fixed ration, variable ratio, fixed interval, variable interval, fixed
duration, variable duration ) and explain why.
Edmund enjoys viewing the rings of Saturn and other astronomical phenomena
through his telescope during the evening hours. However, only evenings that have
cloud-free skies allows him to view the outer-space bodies freely. Sometimes he has
to wait several evenings before viewing conditions are right. But on other occasions
he gets excellent and unobstructed views night after night without interruption.
Assume that a clear unclouded sky is a reinforcer for Edmund's behavior. The target
behaviour in this example is Edmund's looking at astronomical phenomena through his
telescope at night.

Variable Interval (VI). The reinforcement happens in a scattered time frame.
Sometimes Edmund might be lucky to have clear and unclouded skies
every time he uses his telescope. and sometimes he might need to wait a
whole month before clear and unclouded skies. This means that even
though he may look at the telescope every day he might not have a chance
of seeing the rings of Saturn every day. This is the characteristics of a
Variable Interval schedule, the length of the interval in which an action is
reinforced varies around some average. However, the hope for clear and
unclouded skies keeps Edmund coming back and once he receives the
reinforcement of seeing the rings of Saturn he comes back to the
telescope even if he doesn't know how long it will take for him to see the
rings again.
