, CDE3701 ASSIGNMENT 03
DUE DATE: 16 JULY 2026
QUESTION 1
1.1 Discuss how the concept of protective factors, as discussed by Masten et al.
(2011), relates to children's resilience. (3 marks)
Protective factors are the individual, family, school and community resources that reduce
the negative effects of adversity and enable children to adapt successfully despite
experiencing significant risks or challenges. According to Ann S. Masten et al. (2011),
resilience is not an extraordinary characteristic possessed by a few children but rather the
result of ordinary adaptive systems that are strengthened through protective factors. These
protective factors promote healthy emotional, cognitive and social functioning by buffering
children against stress and trauma while enhancing their ability to cope effectively with
adversity. Consequently, children who have access to supportive relationships, positive
environments and personal strengths are more likely to demonstrate resilience and
achieve positive developmental outcomes despite difficult life circumstances (Masten et al.,
2011).
