Chemistry
Can you describe the structure of an atom?
Positively charged nucleus, negatively charged electrons. Protons, neutrons,
electrons.

Can you explain the electronic arrangement in an atom?
Is the ways in which electrons are arranged in an atom.

Can you name the 4 orbitals?
S,P,D,F

Can you explain the Aufbau principle?
Electrons fill subshells of the lowest available energy then fill sub shells of the
higher energy.

Can you explain Bohr’s theory?
Electrons orbit nucleus at fixed energy levels

Can you describe how ions are formed?
Gaining (non-metals) or losing (metals)of electrons.

Ionic bonds- strong electrostatic attraction eternal positive and negative ions.

Can you describe ionic bonding?
Non-metal & metal = gain/ lose electrons

Can you describe the properties of ionic compounds?
A cation with a 2+ charge will make a stronger ionic bond than a cation with a +1
charge.

Can you explain the strength of different ionic bonds?
Are usually crystalline solids / high melting and boiling points. Soluble in water.
Conduct electricity when molten or dissolved.

What is the link between ionic radius and strength of the ionic bond?
The strength of the ionic bonding depends on ionic radius. The smaller the ion is,
the more closely they can be packed together in ionic lattice.
The shorter the distance between oppositely charged ions, the stronger the
electrostatic forces between them and hence the stronger the ionic bond.

Can you describe covalent bonding?
Atoms sharing electrons, non-metal, chemical bond formed when electrons are shared
between 2 atoms.

Can you explain how covalent compounds form?
A covalent bond forms when the difference between the electronegativity of two
atoms is too small for an electron transfer to occur to form ions.

Can you describe what dative bonds are?
A.k.A dipole bonds or coordinate bond.
Is a covalent bond between two atoms where only one atom gives its electron to the
other to share.

Can you explain how dative bonds form?
When one atom donates an electron pair and the other atom accepts the electron
pair, and the atom share the electrons equally.

Can you describe the structure of a metal?
Conduct electricity, giant metallic structures, closely packed together, outer
