Contemporary Curriculum Design and Development in Nursing Education
In developing modules for the course, The Role of the BSN Nurse in Promoting
Community Health, there are important aspects to consider. The modules must reflect course
objectives and student learning outcomes that are context-based and facilitate learning based
on professional standards and theories. The course elements and learning activities must be
designed to create an environment that encourages skill development and reflective practice.
Course Elements
In the Health Promotion and Risk Reduction course, I incorporated a team-based
learning approach with the ultimate goal of making presentations. The presentation topics are
divided into multiple elements that put community health at risk. Students must work with
their teams to develop a presentation that answers the intellectually stimulating and
challenging questions provided by the educator. These questions provide a framework for
students to understand their topic from a physiological and problematic sense. The questions
also challenge the students to address the problem and develop their own strategies to
promote health and wellbeing in their community, which is relevant to the nurse role. These
questions encourage the development of future nursing knowledge and competence when it
comes to health promotion and risk reduction in the community. Not only are students gaining
knowledge about the presentation topics, they are also learning how to work in groups and
grow their teamwork skills. According to Oermann et. al. (2018), organizing a presentation
forces the students to think about what information is needed, what the audience already
knows, and how to explain a complex topic. These presentation elements intellectually
stimulate the students to learn and comprehend the information relevant to the topic and then
