Descriptive Essay
Thousands of people gathered all around the Space Shuttle Challenger waiting in
anticipation to see the grand lift-off that was about to take place. The crowds around
me stared upon it with desire and some even longed to be on it and a part of the
amazing adventure it was about to depart on. As the shuttle started up, the roar
coming from the engines was so loud it was as if we could see the sound coming our
way and the winds were blowing at a gale force speed.
The count down until take off was displayed on a giant billboard, situated to the right-
hand side of the shuttle and every minute which ticked by felt like an hour for me and
the very impatient bystanders. Finally, with only eighteen minutes to go before the
shuttle would take its course, the seven crew members made their way down
towards their shuttle, all dressed in bright blue space suits and each carrying their
helmets in a very heroic fashion. As they walked between the very eager crowds
which began to cheer them on it felt as though they were walking in slow motion and
I knew in that very moment that I was witnessing a historic moment indeed.
One by one the astronauts started to board the shuttle and emotions began to run
high amongst the crowd as family members waved their final goodbyes. Tears
flooded their eyes as they were sad to see their loved ones go, knowing they would
be millions of miles away but almost every single person, including myself were
immensely proud of what these brave astronauts were about to achieve as they shot
off into space on an unimaginable journey. As the crowd started to grow silent the
words “we are ready for take-off” filled the silent space around us. Flames started to
shoot out of the engines and I took a step back so I could fully admire what was
about to take place right in front of my very eyes.
