2 Depression Clinical Symptoms: Lots of sleep, low mood, loss
of motivation, fatigue, loss of appetite, lack of
apathy, anhedonia in all daily activities. Weight
loss, psychomotor agitation, worthlessness and
excessive guilt. Thoughts of death. Drugs: SSRI’s,
TCA’s, RIMA, sertraline, prozac, fluoxetine,
doxepin, venlafaxine. Drugs that inhibit the
reuptake of serotonin into nerve cells &
noradrenaline into cells.
3 Types of Depression Reactive depression: Low mood and feelings of
inadequacy with disruption in sleep, appetite and
energy levels following an event. Non-Reactive
depression: Low mood and feelings of
inadequacy with disruption in sleep, appetite and
energy levels not following any identifiable event.
4 Mania Behaviour; dramatic mannerisms, flamboyant
dress and makeup, increase in goal-directed
behaviour and intrusive and demanding,
aggressive and domineering, impulsive. Racing
thoughts, incoherent rambles and jubblies.
Physical; elevated mood, lack of sleep, changes in
appetite, lack of attention to personal cares. Keep
them calm and not let yourself get caught up in
that presentation. Work with it, not against it.
You gotta make sure that they are looking after
themselves. They are unpredictable. Gotta be
aware of the moodswings. Mood stabilisers;
anticonvulsants (Lithium; pasta carbamazepine)
5 Types of Mania Type 1: One or more manic episodes; driving up
the wrong lane, not acceptable behaviour in
society & Type 2: Hypomanic episode and one
depressive episode
6 Psychosis 2 or more of the following if each preset for a
significant portion of the last month. Delusions
or Hallucinations (Sufficient by self if bizarre =
Really cray cray delusions). Incoherent or
disorganised speech. Severely disorganised or
catatonic behaviour. Any Negative Symptoms
