In the world of 1984, people are regularly “vaporised” by the government; wiped out
from existence. Where did Nikolai Yezhov go in all the photos when Stalin decided
he was a threat and killed him? These disappearances aren’t the only thing Oceania
and the USSR share. It can be argued that the process of people elimination,
surveillance and dictatorship are similar to aspects of the Soviet Union.
