MOORE'S CLINICALLY ORIENTED ANATOMY- LOWER LIMB EXAM QUESTIONS
AND ANSWERS WELL ILLUSTRATED.
Pectineus - answer >>O: Superior ramus of pubis
I: Pectineal line of femur, just inferior to lesser trochanter
N: Femoral nerve (L2, L3); may receive a branch from obturator nerve)
A: Adducts and slightly flexes hip joint; assists with lateral rotation
Psoas Major (Iliopsoas) - answer >>O: Sides of T12-L5 vertebrae and discs
between them; transverse processes of all lumbar vertebrae
I: Lesser trochanter of femur
N: Anterior rami of lumbar nerves (L1, L2, L3)
*A: Act conjointly in flexion and lateral rotation of hip joint and in stabilizing this
joint when standing
*Same as Psoas Minor and Iliac us

Psoas Minor (Iliopsoas) - answer >>O: Sides of T12-L1 vertebrae and
intervertebral discs
I: Pectineal line and iliopubic eminence via iliopectineal arch
N: Anterior rami of lumbar nerves (L1, L2)
*A: Act conjointly in flexion and lateral rotation of hip joint and in stabilizing this
joint when standing
*Same as Psoas Major and Iliac us
Iliac us (Iliopsoas) - answer >>O: Iliac crest, iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, and anterior
sacra-iliac ligaments
I: Tendon of psoas major, lesser trochanter, and femur distal to it
N: Femoral nerve (L2, L3)
*A: Act conjointly in flexion and lateral rotation of hip joint and in stabilizing this
joint when standing
*Same as Psoas Major and Psoas Minor

Sartorius (Tailor's) - answer >>O: Anterior superior iliac spine and superior part of
notch inferior to it
I: Superior part of medial surface of tibia (as part of pes anserine)
N: Femoral nerve (L2, L3)
A: Flexes, abducts, and lateral rotates hip joint; flexes knee joint (medially rotates
leg when knee joint is flexed)
Rectus Femora’s (Quadriceps Femora’s) - answer >>O: Anterior inferior iliac spine
and ilium superior to acetabulum
*I: Via common tendinous (quadriceps tendon) and independent attachments to
base of patella; indirectly via patellar ligament to tibia tuberosity; medial and
lateral vast also attach to tibia and patella via aponeuroses (medial and lateral
patellar retinacula).
*N: Femoral nerve (L2, L3, L4)
*A: Extends knee joint; rectus femora’s also steadies hip joint and helps iliopsoas
flex hip joint.
*Same for all 4 Quad Muscles
Vast us Laterals (Quadriceps Femora’s)
