home language, which affects learning outcomes and equality in education. This essay
critically discusses the relationship between language and power in South African
education, focusing on learning outcomes, inequality, policy issues, and possible
solutions.

Language is closely linked to power because it determines who can access knowledge
and succeed academically. In South Africa, English and Afrikaans have historically been
associated with authority, employment opportunities, and academic success. Learners
who are fluent in these languages often have an advantage over those who speak
African languages at home. This creates a power imbalance in classrooms where
teachers may unconsciously favour dominant languages.From a theoretical perspective,
