Topic: The Impact of Social Media Use on Academic Performance among
Grade 11 Learners

Gap or Problem to Investigate
Social media has become an integral part of learners' daily lives. While
social media platforms provide opportunities for communication,
collaboration, and access to educational resources, excessive use may
negatively affect learners' concentration, study habits, and academic
performance. Many Grade 11 learners spend significant amounts of time on
platforms such as WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly
Twitter). However, there is still uncertainty regarding the extent to which
social media usage influences academic achievement among learners in
secondary schools.This study seeks to investigate the relationship between
social media use and academic performance among Grade 11 learners. The
research aims to identify whether social media usage contributes positively
or negatively to learners' academic outcomes and to explore strategies that
may help learners use social media responsibly for educational purposes.
