Question 1 (25 marks)
Critically discuss how you, as a teacher, integrate the functions of
planning, organising, leading, monitoring, and coordinating to create a cohesive
classroom management system, and what would be the potential impact on
learner behaviour and academic achievement if one of these functions is weak or
missing.
Classroom management is a fundamental aspect of effective teaching and learning.
According to Kayyali (2025), successful classroom management creates a positive,
friendly learning environment that promotes academic achievement, emotional well-
being, and inclusivity. To establish such an environment, teachers must integrate key
management functions, namely planning, organising, leading, monitoring, and
coordinating. These functions work together to create a cohesive classroom
management system that supports learner engagement, discipline, and academic
success. If one of these functions is weak or absent, the effectiveness of teaching and
learning can be significantly compromised.
Planning is the foundation of effective classroom management. It involves setting
learning objectives, preparing lessons, anticipating learner needs, and developing
strategies to manage classroom behaviour. As a teacher, I would carefully plan lessons
that are aligned with curriculum requirements and cater to the diverse needs of learners.
Effective planning includes preparing teaching resources, establishing classroom rules,
and designing activities that actively engage learners. By planning ahead, I can minimise
disruptions and create a structured environment where learners know what is expected
of them. Furthermore, planning allows teachers to anticipate potential behavioural
challenges and implement preventive measures. For example, incorporating interactive
activities can reduce boredom and off-task behaviour. Without proper planning, lessons
may become disorganised, leading to confusion, learner disengagement, and increased
behavioural problems.
, Organising is the process of arranging resources, activities, and classroom structures to
support learning. In my classroom, organising would involve arranging seating plans,
distributing learning materials efficiently, establishing routines, and creating a physical
environment that promotes learning. Organised classrooms provide learners with a
sense of order and security, which contributes to positive behaviour. Additionally,
effective organisation ensures that instructional time is used efficiently, reducing
opportunities for disruptions. For example, clearly labelled learning resources and
established classroom procedures enable learners to work independently and
confidently. If organisation is weak, learners may become frustrated by unclear
instructions or lack of resources, resulting in wasted time, decreased motivation, and
poor academic performance.
Leading is another critical management function that influences classroom culture and
learner behaviour. Leadership involves motivating learners, modelling positive
behaviour, and creating a shared vision for success. As a teacher, I would demonstrate
strong leadership by establishing respectful relationships with learners, communicating
high expectations, and encouraging participation. Effective classroom leaders create a
positive and inclusive atmosphere where learners feel valued and supported. According
to Bush (2020), educational leadership plays a crucial role in shaping learner attitudes
and promoting academic achievement. Through positive leadership, teachers can inspire
learners to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour. However, if leadership is
weak, learners may lack direction and motivation. Poor leadership can result in
diminished respect for classroom rules, increased disciplinary issues, and lower levels of
learner engagement.
Monitoring refers to continuously assessing learner behaviour, participation, and
academic progress. Effective monitoring allows teachers to identify challenges early and
provide timely support. In my classroom, I would monitor learners through observation,
formative assessments, questioning, and regular feedback. Monitoring behaviour helps
ensure that classroom rules are followed consistently, while monitoring academic
progress helps identify learners who may require additional support. Continuous
monitoring also enables teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching
strategies and make necessary adjustments. According to Marzano, Marzano and
Pickering (2003), effective monitoring contributes to improved classroom discipline and
higher learner achievement. If monitoring is neglected, behavioural issues may escalate
unnoticed, and struggling learners may fall behind academically. Consequently, the
