These lecture notes from the Engels course at Katholieke Hogeschool VIVES cover sustainable energy solutions and the global energy industry. Topics include fossil fuel industries (petroleum, coal, natural gas, nuclear), renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal), industrial revolutions and their relationship to energy consumption, and the economics of global supply chains. The notes are useful for understanding key concepts in energy production, environmental impact, and the transition from traditional to renewable energy sources—essential for marketing coursework on sustainability and industry analysis.

1 Sustainable energy solutions
Keynotes
The energy industry = the totality of all of the industries involved in the
production and sale of energy, including fuel extraction, manufacturing, refining
and distribution.
Modern society consumes large amounts of fuel, and the energy industry is a
crucial part of the infrastructure and maintenance of society in almost all
countries.
- Fossil fuel industries
o Petroleum industry
 Petroleum refiners
 Fuel transport
 End-user sales at filling stations
 Oil companies
o Coal industry
 Extraction and processing
o Gas industry
 Natural gas extraction
- Nuclear power industry
o How it effects the environment?
 Pollution? Nuclear waste and what to do with it
- Renewable or alternative energy industry
o Solar power
o Hydroelectric power (dams, water energy)
o Wind power (wind turbines)
o Geothermal power
o Battery storage
- Traditional energy industry
o Collection and distribution of firewood
 for cooking and heating
 common in poorer countries
- Historic perspective

,Questions
1) What role did energy sources play in past economic booms?
Our global top 3 sources of generating energy?

, In the future, we are going to have a problem
 We rely on fossil fuels, but they are by definition finite (= uitputtelijk)
 It starts in 1800: the 1st Industrial Revolution => the first economic boom
o Technology => first time machines were used
o Machines need fuel, energy, coal
 Then the 2nd Industrial Revolution
 Then the 3rd Industrial Revolution

1.1) What economic booms are we speaking of?
 1st Industrial Revolution (1760-1840)
 mechanisatie + fabrieken ontstaan
o Mechanisation of (textile) industry
o Machines/locomotives: steam engine, power by coal

 Steam machines
 You need engine

 2nd Industrial Revolution (1870-1914)
 massaproductie + elektriciteit
o Technological revolution
o Rail (= spoor)
o Where do you get the electricity from? => energy

 3rd Industrial Revolution (1947-present)
 automatisering + computers + internet
o Information systems
o Internet communication

Elke economische boom was getriggerd door energy
- De 1ste door coal
- De 2de door oil
- De 3de door natural gas als energiebron voor elektriciteit
o AI, Bitcoin = based on electricity

The question is, how do you get steam or electricity?

 Overview map of coal mining areas in Belgium,
Netherlands, Germany and Northern France
 Where the 1st Industrial Revolution started

 oil in the world
 Richest countries are the ones with oil

,  Europe? => only Norway

What do we use oil for?
- Plastic
- Car
- T-shirt
- Chair
What country is the biggest producer of oil?
1) US
2) Saudia Arabia
In Europe, which 2 countries get 15% or more of their fiscal revenue from the oil
and gas sector? (2015-2018 average)?

Norway = not even in the EU because of this
- reden: het heeft veel olie & gas → wil zelf controle houden over die inkomsten
REMARK 1
- They are really aware of the climate change
- They invest so much money
o The money comes from producing oil and natural gas
o They send it to the world because the world needs it
o And with that money they become the 1st country in the world on
sustainability and climate
REMARK 2
- What keeps so many people in the world alive?
o Energy
o Because of energy we can produce food, transport it …
- Conclusion: energy is important

1.2) Which sources are considered to be the cleanest / most polluting?
Cleanest source of energy?
 Wind energy
o Materialen nodig to produce the turbines
o Need rare earths (China has the most rare earths)
o Zeer weinig CO² uitstoot
 Solar energy
o Zonnepanelen kosten energie en materialen om te maken
o Need rare earths
