1.1 Integrating Visual and Performing Arts in a Resource-Limited Classroom
The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Creative Arts strongly
advocates for an integrated approach to teaching, recognising that the boundaries
between art forms are often fluid and that learning is enhanced when connections are
made across disciplines. In a classroom with limited resources, this integration is not only
possible but can be a highly effective and creative pedagogical strategy. A single, well-
planned activity can successfully weave together elements of visual and performing arts,
fostering a rich, holistic learning experience for learners.
A practical and effective activity for an under-resourced classroom is the creation and
performance of a "Community Soundscape." This activity integrates the visual arts
(creating 2D and 3D art) with the performing arts (drama, specifically mime and
improvisation) in a meaningful and low-cost way.
The Activity:
The teacher begins by guiding the learners in a discussion about the sounds of their
community. This could include the call of a street vendor, the noise of construction, the
chirping of birds in a local tree, the sound of a taxi hooting, or the chatter of people at a
market. The learners are then tasked with two main objectives:
1.Visual Component: Using any available materials (paper, pencils, charcoal, found
objects, cardboard, clay if available, or natural materials like leaves and sticks), learners
create visual representations of these sounds. This could be a 2D drawing or painting of a
specific source of sound, or a 3D sculptural interpretation of a sound or rhythm, for
example, creating a model of a taxi using cardboard and painting it with patterns that
represent the rhythm of the engine.
2.Performing Component: In groups, learners then "perform" their community
soundscape. This involves using their voices (vocal sounds, onomatopoeia) and bodies
(mime, gesture, and movement) to recreate the soundscape. The group must plan how to
