Choose one of the music or dance movements that you read about this week and at least one work from that movement. Then, address the following: • Examine the movement and specific work in relation to historical and political influences of the movement. • Identify characteristics of the movement and how the work reflects these characteristics. • Include a statement from the artist and one from a critic. • Include a link to the lyrics and/or video depending on your choice. Music has been a great influence in my life. According to our textbook, “No art reaches into our life of feeling more deeply than music (Jacobus & Martin, 2018).” I have to say this is true in my part. Tupac Shakur often had lyrics or music that were personal or political. For instance, Changes by Tupac Shakur which “bears a message that calls for justice [ CITATION Sil19 l 1033 ].” Throughout Changes, Tupac highlights the main issues faced by African Americans and mentions the fact that many issues are related to each other. For instance, he links the color of his skin with poverty – “I’m tired of bein’ poor and even worse I’m black [ CITATION Sil19 l 1033 ]”. Throughout the song, Tupac gives an inside look on the social problems affecting African Americans and suggests possible solutions. Thus, Tupac was sending a message of injustice. Critics say, “changes is a song from Tupac Shakur, who is, arguably, one of the greatest rappers of all times [ CITATION Sil19 l 1033 ].” I have to admit that he has influenced many artist under his genre and individuals throughout the world with his lyrics. As I researched more about Tupac, I found a motivating quote- “During your life, never stop dreaming. No one can take away your dreams.” His own motivation for “changes” is what kept him making his political music on injustice, drugs, and gang violence.
