What is the value of studying the humanities in a business or technical curriculum? How might a topic such as ancient art enhance contemporary life? Nursing is not strictly textbook. Though the knowledge of how the body works and what symptoms/lab values relate to what diagnosis are important, these are not the only things we are caring for. Within the field of nursing, it is important to care for our patients physically as well as emotionally and psychologically. Hospitalizations, can impact the patients thoughts and feelings, feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger all fall under the nursing diagnosis of Ineffective coping. With analyzing music for instance, we absorb the energy through the piece, and have to develop descriptive terms to convey our experience to others. Listening to music, just as well as listening to our patients allows us to receive their emotions, and interpret their feelings through their expression and allow them an outlet from what they are harboring. Similar to music, analyzing ancient art can be incorporated into the nursing profession by comprising similar descriptive terms to scrutinize precision and attention to detail (such as explaining what the wound bed of a pressure ulcer looks like or the integrity of a surgical site). On the Rutgers website, they composed reason points as to why the humanities are essential to nursing, mentioning instances such as evaluating the journey of nursing from Florence Nightingale to now, communication skill development, and the ability to think creatively to pursue evidence-based research for improvements in the field today. In addition, they mention a point for self-care. They discuss that the humanities (music, art, literature, etc.) can be forms of outlets to keep ourselves in a state of wellbeing. Rutgers mentions “enriching the soul and reflecting on the self also instill in nursing students the concepts of holistic care” (Rutgers, 2018). If we are unable to take care of ourselves, how are we in any shape or form able to take care of others. The humanities are solely based on our interpretations of what is being viewed or read from past to present and the discussion with others to gain their perspective. The humanities also allow us to visualize the culture behind the creation.
