, Abstract
The transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life represents one of the most vulnerable periods
in human development. Competent neonatal nursing care during this window requires systematic
assessment, timely identification of complications, and evidence-based interventions that promote
newborn stability and well-being. This paper reviews essential clinical competencies in newborn
care, including the APGAR scoring system, recognition and management of neonatal jaundice,
hypoglycemia screening, prophylactic measures against ophthalmia neonatorum, breastfeeding as-
sessment, newborn reflex evaluation, identification of neurologic warning signs, genital anomaly
recognition, and umbilical cord care. Each domain is examined through the lens of current evi-
dence and clinical best practices, with emphasis on findings that require immediate clinical action
versus those that represent normal transitional physiology.
