Question 1
1.1. There are different ways of conducting assessments in Life Skills. Using AI, define each of
the following types of assessment:
1.1.1. Assignment
An assignment is a form of assessment that allows for a more holistic assessment of knowledge,
skills and values and their application in different contexts. It is a problem-solving exercise with
clear guidelines and a specified length, and the teacher provides learners with the required resources
and information (TMN3703, Study Guide, p. 19). In the CAPS document, an assignment is a formal
assessment task that focuses on content covered in the Personal and Social Well-being study area
(South Africa. Department of Basic Education, 2011, p. 57).
1.1.2. Case study
A case study involves a detailed description of a specific situation or phenomenon, which can be real
or hypothetical and taken from sources such as books, newspapers, magazines, videos or radio. It
enables the teacher to assess whether learners can apply knowledge, skills and values to an
unfamiliar context (TMN3703, Study Guide, p. 19). According to CAPS, the case study is used as a
formal assessment task in Personal and Social Well-being, and the focus is determined by the content
covered in the annual teaching plan (South Africa. Department of Basic Education, 2011, pp. 57-58).
1.1.3. Examination
An examination is a formal assessment administered at the end of the year as part of the internal
examination timetable. In Grades 4 and 5, the examination lasts at least 45 minutes, and in Grade 6,
it lasts at least 75 minutes. It covers work done for the whole year, addresses knowledge and skills
from the Personal and Social Well-being study area, and incorporates more than one type of question
requiring application of knowledge and skills (TMN3703, Study Guide, p. 20). CAPS specifies that
the Grade 6 examination paper consists of three sections totalling 60 marks, while Grades 4 and 5
examinations total 30 marks (South Africa. Department of Basic Education, 2011, pp. 58-59).
1.1.4. Design and make
Design and make involves the production of an actual product using creative processes to achieve a
certain competency. An object is the end product of a design. Learners are required to design, make
and write descriptive statements on the task, showing an understanding of knowledge gained as well
as the application of knowledge and skills (TMN3703, Study Guide, p. 20). In CAPS, design and
make is listed as a formal assessment task in Personal and Social Well-being, and all assessment
criteria must be discussed with learners prior to commencement (South Africa. Department of Basic
Education, 2011, p. 58).
1.1.5. Test
A test is a formal assessment administered at the end of the second term during the Personal and
Social Well-being period. It covers work done in terms 1 and 2, and consists of a range of questions
that assess knowledge recall, understanding and application of knowledge (TMN3703, Study Guide,
p. 20). According to CAPS, tests in Grades 4 and 5 consist of two sections totalling 30 marks, and
the outline for test papers includes matching columns, fill-in questions, lists, and case studies (South
Africa. Department of Basic Education, 2011, p. 58).
