Psychological Questionnaire for Screening Candidates for a Trauma Response
Team

Questionnaire formulated by: 1262849

Questionnaire scenario

You are a consulting psychologist employed by a South African NGO that
deploys trauma response teams to communities affected by violent crime, natural
disasters, and community conflict. The NGO has found that many candidates with
excellent technical qualifications (first aid, counselling certificates) struggle
psychologically in the field. They either burn out quickly, become detached and
ineffective, or engage in power struggles with colleagues and local leaders.

The NGO therefore requires a short, theory-based psychological questionnaire to
screen applicants for the following psychological profile:

Internal locus of control and social interest (from Adler’s Individual Psychology):
Candidates must not blame external circumstances for their difficulties; they must show
a constructive, community-oriented approach to problem-solving (active-constructive
lifestyle). They should be able to cooperate with others and feel part of a larger human
community, rather than pursuing personal power or avoiding responsibility.

, Meaning-centred resilience (from Frankl’s Logotherapy): Candidates must
demonstrate a will to meaning, the ability to find purpose even in suffering, and a
future-directed, responsible attitude. They should see their work as a vocation, not
merely a job, and be able to transcend personal fears for a greater cause.

The questionnaire consists of 10 closed-ended items (no open-ended questions).
Items 1–5 are based on Adler’s theory; items 6–10 are based on Frankl’s theory. Each
item is followed by a justification that explains the theoretical basis, the implementation
in everyday language, and how the item operates in terms of the theory.

Items 1–5: Based on Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology

Item 1
Choose the option that best describes you:

When something goes wrong at work, I usually…
A) …look for what I could have done differently.
B) …blame the situation or other people.

Item justification (Adler, internal locus of control)
(1) Theoretical statement: Adler holds that mental health depends on overcoming
feelings of inferiority by taking responsibility for one’s own life. An internal locus of
control rather than attributing outcomes to external forces.

(2) Implementation: Option A (“look for what I could have done differently”) translates
internal locus of control into everyday language; Option B represents external locus of
control.
