Issues of Good and Evil
Key Vocab:
Good- That which is considered morally right, beneficial and to our advantage. Jesus taught people to be
good through his parables such as the Good Samaritan.
Evil- That which is considered to be extremely immoral, wicked and wrong. Christians believe that if you
have lived an evil life on Earth, you will spend the afterlife in Hell with the Devil as punishment.
Forgiveness- To grant pardon for wrongdoing; to give up resentment and the desire to seek revenge
against a wrongdoer. Jesus taught that forgiveness is important.
Free will- The ability to make choices voluntarily and independently. The belief that nothing is pre-
determined. Christians believe that God gave humans free will.
Justice- Fairness; where everyone has equal provisions and opportunity. Christians belief that God is one
of justice.
Morality- Principles and standards determining which actions are right and wrong. Christians seek to live
moral lives by following God’s laws and Jesus’ teachings.
Punishment- A penalty given to someone for a crime or wrong they have done. Some Christians see Hell
as a punishment for acting immorally on Earth.
Sin- deliberate immoral action, breaking a religious or moral law. Christians believe that humans sin
because they have free will and therefore the choice to do so.
Suffering- Pain or distress caused by injury, illness or loss. Suffering can be physical, emotional,
psychological or spiritual. Christians believe that suffering is a result of sin.
, How do people decide what is right and what is wrong?
-Call upon past experiences
-The law- provides strict guidance on behaviours. Exist to maintain peace and harmony.
-Relatives
-Spiritual leaders/ religious leaders eg. Muhammed, Jesus or Priests, Rabbis
-Sacred texts eg. Bible, Torah
-Conscience
-Logic- using brains rather than emotions
-Compassion- emotions- understand what others are going through
What is a conscience:
-Helps us to assess the right choice to make when reviewing a situation.
-A conscience gives us advance warning of whether the decision we are about the make is right or
wrong.
-Some Christians believe that conscience is God given to help us make the right choices with our free
will.
