Question 1: Environmental Impact Pathways
Environmental impact pathways describe the logical chain that links a specific project activ-
ity to a measurable change in the environment. In practice, this chain follows the structure:
activity, aspect, and impact. The activity is what the project does; the aspect is the physical,
chemical, or biological condition that the activity changes; and the impact is the resulting
consequence for people or ecosystems (Department of Environmental Affairs, 2014). This
question uses a hypothetical road construction project, specifically a two-lane paved high-
way crossing a mixed-use landscape in Limpopo Province, South Africa, to illustrate these
pathways.
1.1 Five Environmental Impacts Identified
The following five impacts were identified for the Limpopo road construction project:
1. Air quality deterioration from construction dust and vehicle emissions (Zenodo, 2024).
2. Soil erosion and land degradation caused by vegetation clearing and earthworks (Quin-
tero, 2006).
3. Disruption of surface water hydrology and sedimentation of nearby streams (EBSCO
Research, 2024).
4. Habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity through direct land-take and barrier effects
(National Academies Press, 2005).
5. Noise pollution affecting both human communities and wildlife along the construction
corridor (EBSCO Research, 2024).
1.2 Cause-and-Effect Pathways for Each Impact
The table below presents each impact as a structured activity-to-aspect-to-impact chain.
Key Distinction
Pathway Logic: The activity-aspect-impact sequence is not merely a labelling ex-
ercise. It forces the practitioner to trace the mechanism through which harm occurs,
which directly informs which mitigation measures are technically appropriate. Address-
ing the aspect is generally more effective than trying to manage the impact after it has
already materialised (Department of Environmental Affairs, 2014).
