Physical impacts: Physical impacts:
• Joint pain • Increased thirst
• Stiffness in joints • Frequent urination
making everyday tasks • Increased hunger
difficult • Unintended weight loss
• Depression • Fatigue
• Sleep disturbances • Blurred vision
• Swelling in knees • Slow-healing sores
• Frequent infections




Psychological impacts:
• Depression is increased by chronic illness and this could also affect individuals socially as they may not feel like interacting. Other
adults with osteoarthritis may feel useless if they need help with the tasks of daily living they could previously manage and this may
negatively affect self-esteem.



Social impacts:
• Loss of mobility and independence brought abut by osteoarthritis can reduce social opportunities for interaction with friends and
family and individuals may find it difficult to get take part in some of the hobbies which they once enjoyed that involved mixing with
others
• Individuals may tire more easily and so may have less energy to engage in social activities. Some people with type 2 diabetes may
avoid social gathering so they can avoid drinking alcohol, which can have an adverse effect on their condition
