Overview

Vaccination remains one of the most significant public health achievement of the modern

society. Vaccination programs have been credited with eradicating poliomyelitis and small pox,

while also reducing the burden of other infectious diseases. High levels of vaccination are

essential in preventing vaccine-preventable diseases (Camparcini et al., 2025). Despite the

recognition of the role of vaccination in preventing morbidity and mortality, vaccine hesitancy is

emerging as a major problem in the US and other high income countries. Vaccine hesitancy

refers to refusal or delay in acceptance of vaccines despite the availability of vaccination

services. Estimates show that despite the Advisory Committee on Immunization (ACIP)

recommending that children receive vaccines for 14 serious infectious disease including measles,

70% of children receive the recommended doses by the age of 24 months (Nguyen et al., 2021).

Vaccine hesitancy has been cited as one of the reasons for failure of parents to immunize their

children. The rising levels of vaccine hesitancy can be attributed to rising lack of confidence in

vaccines, which have led to poor uptake of vaccines. Such low uptake has led to several

outbreaks of pertussis and measles across the country. The purpose of the client paper is to

search and summarize the current literature on evidence-based strategies for reducing vaccine

hesitancy.

Professional and Personal Relevance

Nurses play a key role in primary healthcare by advocating for immunization, overseeing

vaccination programs, assisting with vaccination schedules, raising awareness and combating

misinformation about vaccines. Moreover, nurses are frontline workers, who at risk of

contracting infectious diseases from their patients (Camparcini et al., 2025). Such vulnerability is
