The Differences Between an Annotated Bibliography

and a Discursive Prose Literature Review

Writing comes in several forms as authors seek out a variety of ways to present their

information. Notably, the most common forms that appear in research and study paper are

examples of literature reviews which are the annotated bibliography and the standard literature

review. While the annotated bibliography appears as an outline with a rigid structure, a literature

review stands as an example of discursive prose which delves deeper into the study topic or

argument. Though the two document formats are classified under literature reviews, their vary in

regard to their structure and overall goal when presenting the subject matter under investigation.

The annotated bibliography structure is vastly different from that of a standard literature

review. Notably, the latter option often has a reference page at the very end of the document as a

presentation of all the information sourced for the study. However, an annotated bibliography

follows a strict structure where the reference comes at the beginning of each source. In most

cases, the references are divided into sections and paragraphs with each section deal with

individual arguments or subjects that is for or against the overall idea being presented (Buttram

& MacMillan, 2012). The separation of specific sources is a distinct feature that makes this

method of writing stand out when compared to its counterpart. Additionally, this structure does

not follow a prose format which introduces, builds then concludes on a concept but rather briefly

seeks out relevance, credibility and summary of the main ideology pursued throughout the article

, in focus. Therefore, the structure between the two documents is a distinct feature that allows for

easy identification.

The two-literature reviews differ slightly on the purpose and components enshrined in

their presentation. Particularly, the standard literature option offers a more discursive prose

format than its annotated counterpart. Essentially, the arguments posed in both documents may

be the same but their presentation varies based on the purpose and content highlighted. For

example, the standard form applies an introduction which explains the subject matter while later

subsequently synthesizing the available sources throughout the body portion of the paper. All

the information and ideas presented are later summarized in a conclusion section which ties the

argument together. In contrast, the annotated bibliography summarizes each source

independently to highlight its credibility and relevance on the subject matter (Buttram &

MacMillan, 2012). Therefore, the prose format followed throughout the ordinary literature

review helps synthesize the sources to enhance the idea being presented rather than simply state

its relevance to the claim being made.

A literature review is a personal analysis of the studies and research towards the

establishment of an argument. Essentially, a literature review is primarily an argumentative

piece where one seeks the development of skills, understanding and critical analysis of facts.

Additionally, one also seeks to identify the gaps in the study which then justify the research

fueling the potential research about to be implemented (O’Leary, 2017). A regular review helps

establish a formal understanding of the knowledge present in the study which creates a personal

interpretation of the ideas being brought forward. Particularly, the information presented in this

form of writing seeks to argue for why your study is needed as most of the sources already touch

on the subject matter in focus. This ideology also helps show the research credibility to be
