Kindergarten Foundational Skills -basic print features
-rhyming, isolating sounds and switching sounds to create new words

1st grade foundational skills -print features like capitalization and punctuation

2nd lit -who/what/where/when/why questions for key details
-moral of fables/folktakes from diverse cultures
-describe how characters RESPOND to events
-Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes,
repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.
-describe structure of story
-acknowledge differences in point of view of characters
-compare/contrast two or more versions of the same story
3rd lit -determine moral/lesson with text evidence
-describe characters motivation and show how their actions contribue to
sequence of events
-distinguish between literal and nonliteral language
-use terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza
-compare/contrast themes, setting, plot
