ARM3: Informatics for Transforming Nursing Care ARM 3

A: Nurse Informaticist Responsibilities that Affect Patient Outcomes

Workflow enhancements directly impact patient care which makes it quantifiable. The nurse

informaticist focuses on enhancing clinical workflows, which reduces the potential for error and

promotes evidence-based practice. When working on projects to develop or enhance technology,

the informaticist ensures that they are clinically relevant and able to be integrated into daily

practice. Many times when technology is developed, it is not always in the best interest for how

nurses work. Ensuring the electronic health record (EHR) and decision-support reflect the

workflow allows for vital information to be visible and available in a timely manner. This

reduces the chance for omission and delays and allows for appropriate clinical decision-making.

Informatics often allow for documentation to be decreased and tasks to be eliminated, allowing

more time to be spent with patients rather than on computers completing tasks that may not be

necessary. Workflow enhancements have shown to improve guidelines, safety initiatives, and

quality of care. (Asif & Khan, 2024).

Nurse informaticists are often tasked with testing new modules or functions before they are made

available to the clinical team or rolled out across the organization. Their feedback can determine

if it is safe to use, workflow friendly, or even usable at all. These technological improvements

may include anything from a simple pop-up alert to complex EHR work flow modifications,

mobile applications, or clinical decision-support tools. If there are errors or areas for

improvement, it is far less costly to address them before wide scale implementation (Shi,

Wotherspoon, & Morphet, 2025). Nurses are also uniquely qualified to be patient and employee

advocates during the development and testing phase of technology. Technology should be

designed with the end user in mind and meet the needs of evidence-based practice. By involving
