Enkele vooropgestelde definities
• Edward Burnett Tylor (1871): … that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits
acquired by man as a member of society
• Geert Hofstede (2001): … the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one group of people from another
• Steven J. Heine (2008): … any kind of information (ideas, beliefs, technology, habit, practice) that is acquired from other members of one’s species
through social learning that is capable of affecting an individual’s behaviors

Algemene psychologie
• Psyche als ‘de hardware’ (van de computer)
• Context en inhoud doen er niet toe: vormen ruis voor de psyche
• ‘Psychic unity’: psyche in elke context hetzelfde
• Doel: zoeken naar universele wetten van psychologisch functioneren, context/inhoud wegdoen

Culturele psychologie
• Context en inhoud maken deel uit van de psyche: helpen psyche te begrijpen (mutual constitution)
• Shweder: culturele psychologie is de studie van de manieren waarop subject/object, zelf/ander, psyche/cultuur,
persoon/context, … samen leven, elkaar nodig hebben en elkaar dynamisch, dialectisch constitueren

Niveaus zijn met elkaar verbonden en beïnvloeden elkaar (de grote ideeën waren er niet
zonder individuen die erover nadachten en cultuur bestond niet zonder interacties,
individuen, instituties die opgericht werden en ideeën)

Redenen van mutuele constitutie (psyche en echte wereld)
• Principe van existentiële onzekerheid: de mens is van nature gemotiveerd om betekenissen uit zijn sociaal-culturele
omgeving te halen
o Baseren op sociaal-culturele omgeving om betekenissen te krijgen uit ons denken/voelen/zijn
o Worden van nature een cultureel wezen
• Principe van intentionele werelden: mensen en sociaal-culturele omgevingen doordringen elkaar
o Intentionele werelden zijn menselijke 'artefactuele' werelden die bevolkt worden door ‘intentionele dingen' (=
dingen gecreëerd door de mens)
§ Geven mee vorm aan ons denken, voelen en zijn
§ Zijn vormgegeven door denken van anderen rond ons
§ Geen identiteit die losstaat van het menselijk begrip: geen natuurlijke soorten (vb. verschillende
culturele betekenissen van onkruid, schade, zonde, stelen, scheiden)
