2. Introduction
2.1 Background and Context
India and South Africa are both prominent members of the BRICS consortium (Brazil,
Russia, India, China, and South Africa), representing two of the largest and most
complex education systems in the Global South. Despite their shared membership in
this influential group, both countries have distinct historical trajectories, colonial
experiences, and contemporary challenges that have shaped their primary education
systems in unique ways (Wolhuter, 2020).
India, the world's second most populous country with approximately 1.35 billion people,
gained independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The country has witnessed
remarkable economic growth over the past three decades but continues to face
significant challenges in providing quality education to all its citizens, with approximately
25% of its population unable to read and write (Santhakumar, 2020).
