Mathematics plays a major role in the healthcare field, even though the level of

complexity varies depending on the provider’s responsibility and the patient’s physical quality.

In the medical field, accuracy is critical, and even small mathematical errors can have serious or

life-threatening consequences. Miscalculations involving medication dosages, fluids, or patient

vital signs can directly affect patient safety and treatment outcomes. For this reason, training

programs for healthcare careers such as nursing, pharmaceutical, and optical career emphasize

the development and reinforcement of mathematical skills that are necessary for accurate

decision-making and patient care.

One big area where mathematics is heavily applied is pharmaceutical practices. Math is

extensively used by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, who are responsible for preparing,

measuring, and distributing medications. Pharmacists must calculate correct medication for

dosages and accuracy prescriptions to ensure patient safety. Furthermore, professionals must

consider factors such as dose frequency and duration of treatment. For example, some

medications are prescribed to patients to take twice a day for seven days. In an article published

by the American Career College titled “The Medical Side of Math: How is math Used in the

Medical Field?” they listed several mathematical concepts commonly used in pharmaceutical

practice. These include metric conversions, basic arithmetic that involves whole numbers and

fractions, and algebraic equations to solve dosage problems based on the patient’s weight and

age. Pharmacists may also rely on statistics and graphs to analyze drug absorption rates, interpret

clinical data, and evaluate the effectiveness of the medication. In this way, they can prevent

diseases and health issues, as pharmaceutical companies continue their research to improve
