SHORT-ESSAY QUESTIONS
ACTIVITY 1
Environmental education is an emerging field that has been around for some
years. Yet it is not an easy field to tie down (if one would want to): its
boundaries are fuzzy and interpretations of its documents, foundations and
directions are multiple.
1.1. In your understanding, define environmental education? (2)
I would personally define environmental education as knowledge and
information about the changes that have altered the environment elements
such as land, water, weather, and vegetation; social, cultural and political
environment are essential components of environmental education.
Consequently, the general public should be equipped with all these to be able
to solve the problems of the environment.
1.2. Explain why environmental education is considered an emerging field
with fuzzy boundaries. (3)
Environmental education is considered an emerging field with fuzzy boundaries
because it encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including environmental
science, ecology, sustainability, and social sciences. Environmental education is
considered an emerging field with fuzzy boundaries due to its interdisciplinary
nature, drawing from fields such as ecology, sociology, economics, and ethics.
This multidisciplinary approach leads to diverse interpretations and
applications, making it challenging to establish clear-cut boundaries and
frameworks for the field.
1.3. Why is it important for teachers in environmental education to teach
learners about the different notions of environmental education history and
how they influence us? Give examples. (5)
It is important for teachers in environmental education to teach learners about
the different notions of environmental education history and how they
influence us because it provides context and perspective on the development
of environmental education as a field. Higher levels of environmental
knowledge correlate significantly with a higher degree of pro-environment and
conservation behavior. The more people know, the more likely they are to
recycle, be energy efficient, conserve water, etc.
