Prioritisation (Acute) ANSWER 1) Respiratory patient

2) Discharge patients

4) Known patients and needs increasing assistance to mobilise

5) New mobility referrals

Respiratory patient (Prioritisation) ANSWER 1 = More likely to be dependent ?
deteriorating chest?

These patients require a plan or management in place to avoid deterioration. ? susceptible
to pneumonia / septicaemia

Ensure their conditions remain stable and management plan continues to benefit the patient

, Discharge patient (Prioritisation) ANSWER 2 = These patients require assesment upon
discharge to clarify if they are safe to go home ( possible stairs assessment? / needs)

- Encourage safety for these patients (Correct referrals in place prior to going home?)
- Prevent bed blocking (Wider hospital perspective)
- Prevent hospital readmissions (Injuries/ safety)
- For the physiotherapist seeing the patient on the next day ( a plan is in place)
- The earlier they get seen, ensures same day discharge.

Post op laparotomy (acute prioritisation) ANSWER 3 = These patients are likely to
deteriorate if not seen early enough. Some trust policies recommend that the patient to be
seen for chest and function day 0/ 1 post op.

These patients are mechanically ventilated during surgery, an assessment of their chest
performance, therefore teaching the patient ACBT and incentive spirometry is essential.

Patient who is known to you and needs increasing assistance (prioritisation) ANSWER
4= These patients are deteriorating, therefore needs seeing but at present they are not
presenting with any symptoms that would suggest they are unwell.

Therefore they can be seen as a lesser priority to those that are unwell or require urgent
intervention to complete their management plans.

New mobility referral (prioritisation) ANSWER 5 = These patients may be seen by the
nurses during first initial contact. Therefore these patients would have a way of mobilising
during admission.

There is currently no plans to discharge or the patient is unwell, therefore they can be
prioritised to accommodate more dependent patients/situations.
