The Beatitudes of Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:1-12
Introduction
Mathew 5:1-2 states that "And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and
when he was set his disciplines came unto him. And he opened his mouth and taught them.
These are the main contributors of the Beatitudes of Jesus to his disciples, which were also
contributed by four elements of Jesus within the chapter: the preacher, pulpit, occasion, and the
Sermon (Stefanovic, 2014). Jesus as a preacher was based on his intelligence in preaching based
on the spirit without measure (John 3:34), powerful preacher according to his authority (Matthew
7:29), successful preacher for converting souls (John 10:42), as a lawful preacher that he had
unction from God for his mission (John 8:18). The pulpit that Jesus preached was mainly in the
mountain, and the occasion was based on how Jesus ascended the mountain to see the multitude,
and the Sermon was what the Beatitudes were mainly addressing (Stefanovic, 2014). Therefore,
the main purpose of this paper would be to explore the eight beatitudes that Jesus preached while
he was giving the Sermon on the mountain. It will also be comparing the Beatitudes with what is
recorded in Luke 6:20-23 towards understanding what Jesus was mainly focusing on with the
blessing’s sayings.
Beatitudes of Jesus Christ
1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs (Mathew 5:3)
The old testament backgrounds offer a description of the messianic kingdom and the
Christian that ought to reinforce Christianity. According to Isaiah 61:1-3, the messiah would be
preaching the good ridings among the poor, which is evident in Mathew 5:3. In Luke 4, he read
through Isaiah's passage to the synagogue and declared that he was fulfilling the prophecy. These
texts by Jesus intend to offer the Christians a clear understanding of the poor in Jesus who have
