SUS1501 – Sustainability and Greed

In reflecting on the things that have struck me throughout this module, I revisited my
opinions on the multiple-choice questions from the Crossroads assignment. I
compared my current opinions to my original opinions and made some brief notes to
analyze the changes in my thinking.

Looking at the first question about wealth and poverty, I originally leaned towards the
idea that poverty and wealth are relative and cannot be separated. However, my
current opinion aligns more with the notion that we should focus on preventing
extreme wealth while others suffer in poverty. This shift in thinking highlights the
importance of addressing income inequality and ensuring a more equitable
distribution of resources.

In regards to saving the rhinos, my opinion has remained consistent. I believe that
we must save the rhinos because it is the right thing to do, regardless of any other
considerations. The preservation of our environment and wildlife is crucial for future
generations.

Regarding the issue of resource depletion and population growth, my original opinion
was that technological solutions could solve any problems that arise from
overconsumption. However, I now understand that putting the brakes on population
growth and reducing the consumption of the wealthy are essential in addressing
resource depletion.

My opinion on investment under neo-colonialism also remains the same. I believe
that it increases the gap between rich and poor countries. The exploitation of
resources in developing nations by foreign investors perpetuates economic
inequality and hinders sustainable development.

The statement that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of
capitalism initially struck me as true, but unreasonable. However, upon further
reflection, I believe that we need to work on our imagination and envision alternative
economic systems that prioritize social and environmental wellbeing.
