Types of disease

Bacterial and viral diseases are caused by different types of microorganisms that affect the body in distinct ways. Bacteria are living single-celled organisms that can multiply on their own and sometimes produce toxins that cause illness. Many bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, although antibiotic resistance is becoming a growing problem. Viruses are much smaller than bacteria and cannot reproduce without invading a host cell. They use the body’s cells to replicate, often causing diseases like the flu or common cold. Antibiotics do not work on viral infections, so treatment usually focuses on symptom relief or antiviral medications. Overall, both types of pathogens can cause disease, but they differ in structure, how they spread, and how they are treated.
